**Join our dynamic, fast paced and committed team as a ASSISTANT PROJECT ENGINEER**

The Assistant Project Engineer is a key support role within the Engineering Projects department. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, fast paced and committed team of experienced Project Engineers and will work to develop and deliver market leading counterweights and castings to a growing range of international construction customers.

The successful candidate will ensure the on-time delivery and good quality of samples of new products to our customers who are leaders within the construction industry (JCB, Volvo, CAT etc.) The requirements for the role include project managing cross functional teams, developing, and maintaining relationships with customers, suppliers, and other functions within the business as well as interpreting and communicating the technical and specification requirements to meet the customer deliverables.

The successful candidate will develop new skills in design feasibility studies, APQP, design for manufacture and project management with the aim of delivering quality sample products to our customers. The candidate will be involved in a range of projects from new products to engineering change management and internal process development projects.

This challenging but rewarding role will provide the foundational skills for a Project Manager/Engineer to take on larger, more challenging projects at a later stage of their career with the possibility of joining Blackwood Engineering’s Development Pathway Program.


The correct candidate should have the following skills and attributes:


  • Ability to understand and interpret customer drawings and customer specifications and communicate these effectively to our supply base.
  • Candidate should be a motivated self-starter with the desire to be involved in a wide range of projects and activities.
  • Must be willing to manage and complete general administrative tasks within the Engineering department.
  • Must be able to work as part of a small team.
  • Must be capable of identifying tasks and following them through to completion.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Computer literacy, proficient in most basic MS Office packages.
  • Show a genuine interest in the products that we produce and our mission to ‘Enable our customers to build the machines of tomorrow’.

Specifically, your duties will include: 


Project duties:

  1.  Review Engineering Drawings: Showcase your attention to detail by checking engineering drawings against inspection reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
  2.  Project Information Collation: Play a vital role in organising project data, completing timing plans, gathering PPAP elements and contributing to the efficient flow of information within the team.
  3.  Trial Studies and Data Collection: Take part in trial studies, contributing to data collection efforts that inform decision-making processes.
  4.  Systems Improvement Assistance: Work collaboratively with the team to identify opportunities for improvement in existing systems and processes.

Who We Are Looking For

We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated Project Engineer to join our fastgrowing Engineering/ Projects Department.

You will have a structured and organised working attitude and able to work independently with multiple projects and deadlines.

You will lead and manage a range of NPI/ Engineering Change projects through the project life cycle from sales handover to full production, reporting directly to the Project Manager.

Your Responsibilities

Working closely with our Suppliers/ Customers and internal cross-functional teams you will ensure that quality parts are delivered to our world class Customers on time, in scope and within budget.

Main duties are:

  • Creation and maintenance of the project tracking timeline and project files.
  • Ensuring our standardised APQP process is followed, fully complied with and supporting documentation is clear, relevant, organised and centrally available.
  • Lead and organise technical reviews with the supplier, assessing supplier control processes and ensuring correct validation of all PPAP/ quality documentation.
  • Working with the supplier, providing technical leadership to ensure samples and pre-production parts are delivered appropriately and on time and that supplier processes allow for repeatability and reproducibility to remove risks of issues in full production.
  • Develop a close working relationship with the customer, being the key technical contact, understanding and managing the customer specifications/ promoting the voice of the customer during the project phase and after completion.
  • Ensure PPAP completion and approval prior to production handover and delivery of the new parts.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 5 GCSEs including Maths and English at Grade C or above
  • B Tech 3 or 2 A Levels
  • HND/ Mechanical Engineering Degree
  • Sound knowledge and experience of APQP, including the PPAP process, FMEA’s and control plans.
  • Strong knowledge of metallurgy, metrology techniques and drawing practices
  • Experience working with suppliers based in India and China would be advantageous
